Many adults reach this question late. A work role changes, a child is diagnosed, a training program gets harder, or years of getting by on effort stop working. You may wonder whether ADHD explains your history, or whether something else does. A good evaluation answers that question without assuming the answer in advance.

At Ballast, adult ADHD evaluations are conducted by doctoral-level psychologists. We look at your current difficulties, your developmental history, and the other things that can look like ADHD or sit alongside it.

The Evaluation

What an evaluation looks like

A detailed interview about attention, organization, impulsivity and restlessness, and when each began
A review of childhood and adult functioning at school, at work and in relationships
Standardized questionnaires and, where indicated, objective testing
Careful attention to other explanations, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, medical conditions, substance use, autism, and learning differences
When possible, input from someone who knew you as a child or knows you well now
A feedback session where we explain what we found, what it means, and what to do next

We want this to be convenient for you. Evaluation visits can typically be done online as well as in person, and you will typically have your written report back within 7 to 10 days. The length and number of visits depend on your questions and your history, and we will tell you what is involved before you commit.

Before You Book

Things worth knowing before you book

ADHD is a clinical diagnosis. No single test confirms or rules it out, and a screening questionnaire online is not an evaluation.
Not everyone who is evaluated is diagnosed with ADHD. A useful evaluation can also clarify that something else is going on.
If you need documentation for school accommodations, standardized testing, a licensing board or an employer, tell us at the start. Those requests can require additional testing and a more detailed report.
Ballast's psychologists do not prescribe medication. If medication is a goal, we will provide a written summary that you can share with your prescriber.
Evaluations are currently private pay. We will explain costs before we begin and can provide documentation you may submit to your insurer, though we cannot promise reimbursement.
